I just read this scary article on the effect of gadgets and gaming on children. My thoughts rushed to my own kids and their relationship with tech and the internet… and thankfully, I figured things aren’t bad with us, but they could be, if we all don’t recognise that the problem could just creep in on us and we won’t spot it, until its too late!
So here are my thoughts on the subject.
As much as I love and promote technology and social media, I cannot help but shudder at the speed of their proliferation among, and depth of their impact on our kids, courtesy tech-savvy, indulgent (and often lazy) parents.
Dining-table conversations and no-gadget time together are great ways of sharing knowledge and awesome tools of parenting… and they should always get priority over “user-generated” content and mind-numbing gadgets.
THE QUESTION IS, DO WE AS PARENTS HAVE THE TIME AND THE ENERGY, TO DO ALL THAT IT TAKES TO STRIKE A BALANCE? AND THERE’S NO DOUBT IN MY MIND, THAT THE RESPONSIBILITY OF STRIKING THIS BALANCE LIES WITH US, NOT THE KIDS!
